It’s finally time for Love Saves The Day – the annual two-dayer taking over Eastville Park in Bristol this weekend, and major marker of the beginning of the festival season proper. With weather forecasts no longer predicting an inevitable and welcomed sun burn, Pitch have pooled resources for a selection of this weekend’s recommended acts, because, let’s be honest, with a lineup this good we’re going forget about the weather pretty quickly…
Fat Freddy’s Drop
21:30-23:00 – Main Stage – Sunday
‘Nuff said about the New Zealand Funk and Dub 7-piece, really. They’ve been around since the early noughties and are starting to become regarded as one of the world’s best live bands. First booked by Team Love over 10 years ago, these guys are unmissable.
22:00-23:00 – Cloud 9 – Sunday
Grime MC Kano is unfortunately clashing with Fat Freddy’s Drop on Sunday evening – no doubt creating an uncomfortable rift between festival goers. We were lucky enough to have a word with the grime pioneer last summer after he dropped his brilliant come back album, Made in the Manor, when he told us his top three grime acts to look out for.
14:05-14:50 – Main Stage – Saturday
We caught Elder Island at this year’s Haze Sessions. The Bristol trio take looping and cutting to another level, but it’s the R&B and soul soaked voice of lead singer, Kate Sargent, that put these guys into a league of their own. Make sure you catch them if you’re looking for Bonobo or Caribou vibes.
16:30-17:30 – Main Stage – Sunday
Pitch knows that Shy FX throws a great party after seeing him throughout the festival scene in recent years. Playing infectious jungle anthems and massive drum’n’bass tunes, the Digital Soundboy hails from the early 90s and plays rhythms to match – perfect for a sunny evening.
22:00-23:00 – Paradiso – Sunday
Toronto producers BBNG are a jazz collective that have worked with modern day hip hop-ers such as Ghostface Killah and Frank Ocean. Mixing jazz, blues and soul with hip hop beats is sure to provide some serious vibes on Sunday – it’s just a shame there’s so much other top stuff programmed at the same time, making Sunday’s closing set decisions a lot harder.
20:00-21:00 – Dance Off – Sunday
Did someone say crack house? DJ Zinc is a man who has been driven to create his own genre – a fusion of deep house, funky house and fidget house (alright calm down, mate). Sure to play some of his career stalwarts like Super Sharp Shooter, Zinc is someone Pitch sorely regrets missing at previous festivals, so you’ll catch us at this stage for sure.
Love Saves the Day takes place 27-28 May at Eastville Park, Bristol. For full linup info and tickets, head over to lovesavestheday.org.
